Oct 15th was the second 2014 test fishing day for South Sound chum at Apple Cove Point. The weather was not pleasant, but despite the chop, fishing was quite decent on the morning incoming tide. We caught a total of 2,450 chum (plus 92 coho) in five sets. Once the tide started ebbing, catches dropped off and our last set was a “water haul”. Based on our subsamples (weighted by size of each set), we estimate the catch was just 22% females, slightly lower than we observed last week. The fish were again large, averaging about 9.6 pounds.
Set 1 – 208 chum
Set 2- 595 chum
Set 3 – 1,400 chum
Set 4 – 247 chum
Set 5- zero chum
